Pool Pump Repairs

Whether you have a swimming pool or spa, the pump is the heart of your entire pool system, just like your engine is the heart of your car. Your pool pump is a key component of the filtration process and plays a critical role in keeping your pool in good health. By pumping water in a continual cycle through the filter and chemical treatment system (if installed), your pump keeps the pool clean and safe to use.

We have years of experience dealing with repairs and maintenance of both swimming pool and spa pumps in Auckland. Whether your pump is leaking, making loud noises, won’t turn on, or just plain old tired and worn out, we can solve the problem. Our technicians can repair it, or we can offer you the option to replace it with an energy-efficient pump, to keep it running efficiently for longer, and save you in the long run on your energy bill.

If you need swimming pool pump repairs, spa pool pump maintenance, or you’re thinking of having a pump entirely replaced, contact us now. We can also give you some pointers on caring for your pump to get the longest lifespan possible out of it. For example, it’s best to remember that the hair and lint pot needs to be emptied and cleaned on a regular basis throughout the swimming season. If it’s allowed to clog up and block the water flow, the seals will crack and the motor could burn out.

Tips for Choosing The Right Pool Pump

If you do want to replace a pump, it’s important to size it correctly. This will ensure that your pool runs optimally, resulting in fewer problems, easier maintenance, lower and more cost-effective energy costs, and longer equipment life. As a general rule of thumb, the larger your pool, the larger the pump you will need, and the more it will cost to run.

Any additional equipment you install into your pool will also have a major influence on the size of pump you require. Pool cleaners, solar heating, and water features all require more energy and power than is required to simply pump water through the filtration system.

Designing the plumbing system to be hydraulic efficient can also reduce the size of pump you require. This may mean using 50mm instead of 40mm PVC pipes, using as few elbows as possible, and making the length/run of piping from pool to filtration equipment as short as possible

The major choice you have as a pool owner when selecting pool pumps is whether or not to buy a fixed speed or multi-speed pump. Multi-speed products are becoming increasingly popular, as they are able to be adjusted (manually or automatically) to run at different speeds depending upon what function they are performing. For instance, they would be set to run at the lowest possible speed when filtering water, at a mid-range speed when operating the pool cleaner, and at maximum speed when activating a water feature or solar heater. They can be much cheaper to run than single-speed pumps, especially over long periods of time. Talk to us to find out more.

Key Questions to Ask Before Replacing a Pump

There are a few key points you need to consider before speaking to your pool professional about replacing your pump, or selecting a new one:

  1. How big is your pool? What is its volume in litres? You can calculate this with the following formula: (Width x Length x Average Depth) x 1000.
  2. How often do you want to circulate the water—every 4 or 8 hours? The Australian Standard says every 4 hours is enough, but some prefer to turn the water over more regularly.
  3. What equipment do you have installed on your pool currently, or do you plan to install? Heaters, water features, solar heating, in-floor cleaning systems, and regular pool cleaners all require different flow rates, which will impact the pump required.
  4. What distance from the pool is the pool pump located?
  5. How much does your existing pump cost to run? What could you save by moving to a multi-speed product? Your pool shop should be able to calculate this easily enough.

If you are building a brand-new pool, your builder should be able to ensure that your pump and filter are correctly matched for optimum performance.
